Digital Pearls

The pearl of our Festival is the International Competitive Section. Year after year, a selection of the best short films of the season pass through here. However, the unstoppable evolution of video has revolutionized the audiovisual scene, giving rise to new practices in the world of the short film. For example, kinescope transfer, in which video is transferred to celluloid, has been popular for years now for showing films on the big screen.

But for some time, celluloid has been getting pushed aside by the digital world. Short filmmakers have been recording and showing their work more and more often directly on video, whether it be for economic, technical or aesthetic reasons. A few years ago, the Video Competition was a showcase for products with more will than style, and were clearly first timers. Today, the Video Competition includes films of undeniable merit whose results are comparable to those in film. So much so that some big short film festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand have definitively decided to unify the two formats.

If you want proof, we are showing a selection of gems made and shown directly in the video format, widely-renowned, award-winning short films. Because very soon now, the distinction will no longer be video and film, but rather video and celluloid. It is all motion pictures. It is all Cinema.
