At the beginning of the decade, there was a double revelation. First the modest, fantasy film from Filmax, Dagon, was released. One of the characters was a fish woman that one keen observer compared to the legendary Barbara Steele. That woman stole the film, because a presence like that doesn't come along every day. It was reasonable to think they had hired an internationally distinguished actress. Not even; it was a young woman from Córdoba, completely unknown... And the surprise was even greater when the same face appeared as the junkie Susi in Padre Coraje. Everyone was good in that memorable mini-series, but the performance by that woman exceeded all expectations. In a matter of one year, a young actress had appeared, bringing together like no one else, stage presence and quality acting.
The most attentive short filmmakers clamored for her and it is hard to find a more devoted actress. All her roles in shorts share the work and intensity of full-length films, as though each role were the most important of her career. Macarena’s filmography in shorts is an extraordinary gallery of characters who are lost, drowning in a world they cannot keep up with, and who leave their boundless humanity on the surface. The anorexic girl in Contracuerpo, the addict in Luminaria, the insomniac trapped by lost love Nieves, the girl on the edge in Acción Reacción... The awards have, of course, been countless.
Like all tragic actresses, she is a wonderful comic actress: she managed to parody her own junkie character in Neon Flesh and has gained popularity with La que se avecina. She hasn't lost her connection with the fantastic, starring in Jaume Balagueró's Para entrar a vivir. When she took her first important role in a full-length film with La dama boba, she won the Award for Best Supporting Actress at the Festival of Málaga. And she has just made her first film as lead actress, Sexykiller: morirás por ella.
